   admiral
   Born in Valensoie, Pierre-Charles-Jean-Baptiste-Silvestre de Villeneuve, during the revolution of 1789, became a vice admiral (1896). He took part in the Egyptian campaign and escaped the disaster at Aboukir (August 1798) by seeking refuge in Naples. In 1804, napoléon i, who wanted to invade England, ordered Villeneuve to draw the British fleet, under Admiral Nelson, toward the Antilles and then return quickly accompanied by spanish ships. Villeneuve arrived in Martinique in May 1805, and set sail in June, but was followed by Nelson. Villeneuve took refuge at Cadiz, Spain, on August 18 to protect his fleet instead of going to Brest, as Napoléon had ordered. Nelson was waiting for him and Villeneuve was caught in the Battle of Trafalgar. it was a disaster for France. Captured by the British, de Villeneuve committed suicide upon his release.
